Sideline Drive: a 5v5 flag football play that beats zone
Sideline Drive starts from spread. Zone. Outside routes can finish near a boundary.
Updated October 20, 2026.
- Spread
- Beats zone
- 15 yd to goal
- QB: drop back
- Deepest route 12 yd
Why it beats that coverage
Sideline Drive stretches zone coverage with outside breaks at different depths. Y’s 6-yard out gives you the first boundary throw, with X’s comeback and Z’s deeper out behind it. Choose the side with more room before the snap, then keep C’s hook available inside.
The quarterback’s read
- Y on the out
- X on the comeback
- Z's out on the other side
- C on the hook
Each player’s job
- QB: Drop back and look to Y on the out, X on the comeback, Z’s out on the other side and C on the hook. Pick the side with more room before the snap, then check the defenders as the routes break.
- C: Run a hitch to 8 yards and return slightly left to 7. Turn toward the quarterback as the inside hook option. Show your hands in the middle when defenders widen toward the boundary throws.
- X: Push vertically to 12 yards, then come back outside to 10. Turn toward the ball while staying inside the sideline. Give the quarterback a deeper outside target beyond Y’s shorter out.
- Y: Climb to 6 yards and break left on the out. Keep the route flat toward the boundary. Look back early so the quarterback can throw as the outside window opens.
- Z: Run to 10 yards and break right on the out. Stay level through the turn and leave enough space before the sideline to catch. You give the quarterback an outside option on the opposite side.
When to call Sideline Drive
Start from spread with 15 yards to the goal line. Call it against zone defenders who are leaving space toward the sidelines. The outside breaks let your receivers work away from crowded middle areas at different depths.
Before the snap, help your quarterback choose the side with more space. After the snap, read the coverage over that side. Y’s out comes first, but a defender sitting on it can leave a deeper window for X returning toward the ball.
Use the route depths to match the down. Y breaks at 6 yards, X reaches 12 before coming back to 10, and Z turns at 10 on the far side. If you need a longer gain, see where the catch will happen before taking the shortest completion.
What closes the sideline
An outside defender can sit on the out while deep help stays above the comeback. Tight man coverage can also follow the breaks and remove the easy boundary target. Keep C in view when defenders spread outside and leave room for the hook.
Call Levels when the defense widens enough to open the middle. If a corner keeps jumping Y’s short out, call Smash Return and put a corner route above a short hitch. Against man defenders who stay attached through the outside breaks, call Mesh Drive to make them chase across the field.
Coaching the boundary throws
Put a sideline marker in every passing drill. Y and Z must break with room left to catch before reaching it. The quarterback should lead the receiver toward open space without throwing the ball beyond the boundary.
Coach X to sell the vertical route before turning back. The defender needs to respect the climb to 12 yards. Coming back toward the pass at 10 helps X meet the ball instead of waiting for it to arrive.
Keep the early side choice simple for a new quarterback. Start by working Y and X together, then add Z and C as the progression grows familiar. Avoid asking the quarterback to stare from sideline to sideline while the rush closes.
Receivers can finish these outside throws out of bounds. Listen to the officials for clock administration and stay ready for the next snap. Keep your next call available on the sideline so a boundary catch does not interrupt the rest of the series.
Use the route guide to compare a comeback with an out. X returns toward the quarterback after a deeper stem; Y and Z turn across at their stated depths. Walk that distinction before increasing the pace.
